Steve Earle brought a bundle of songs in tribute to Townes Van Zandt on Saturday to The Egg. Here's what some fans had to say in response to Greg Haymes' review on the You Review blog at http://blogs.timesunion.com/reviews:

Pure, simple, passionate music. The Earles were awesome.

Great review of a great night of music, Greg. The only flaw in Steve's set, though, was his not being content to conclude the night with "Jersusalem," which is a rousing plea for peace. Why he followed that gem with a perfunctory rendition of "Copperhead Road" is odd, especially since the crowd wasn't even clamoring for it!

We drove 5 hours from Canada and as expected Steve made it well worth the drive. What a great venue for live music! The Townes tracks sounded awesome. I have to agree with the last comment, though, that "Copperhead Road" was kind of anticlimatic.

We also received a letter the old-fashioned way -- in the mail -- in praise of the Mendelssohn Club's May 17 concert:

Refurbished Chancellor's Hall proved a most adequate platform from which the Mendelssohn Club of Albany successfully launched its commemorative centennial concert on May 17.

Performing songs from Bizet to Broadway, the 70-voice male chorus demonstrated their vocal versatility by thrilling their sold-out audience with the hushed intonations of "September Song," contrasted with the resounding refrains of "The March of the Men of Harlech."

Conductor Victor Klarnish deserves special kudos for shaping this tonal triumph marking the chorus' stint as the longest continuously performing arts group in the Capital Region.

Two standing ovations at evening's end left all with a song in their heart and the firm assurance that the Mendelssohn Club will continue to musically prosper and entertain well into the 21st century.
