TROY -- Dr. Hugh V. Foley, 84, of Troy, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 7, 2005 at Samaritan Hospital with his family by his side. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Dr. Hugh V. and Marie Jordan Foley. He was the husband of Catherine M. O'Hara Foley. Dr. Foley was a graduate of LaSalle Institute, Siena College and Albany Medical College. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He also served in the Korean War as an army physician in the Medical Corp. Upon his return home from Korea, Hugh practiced obstetrics in the Capital Region for over 40 years. He was on the medical staffs of both the Leonard and St. Mary's Hospital. Dr. Foley was Chief of Staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1970-1972. He spent the next several decades at the Samaritan Hospital, and in the mid seventies he became Chief of Staff of the Dept. of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He retired in 1993. In 1998, he was named honorary member of the Medical Staff Committee at the Samaritan Hospital. He was a member of the Rensselaer County Medical Board and the American Medical Association. He was a former director of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

Dr. Foley received the Professor Egon Plager Award for Humanitarian Effort from Siena College in 1996. In 2000 he was awarded the Edward H. Pattison Citizenship Award from the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Catherine (Kate) Foley Muller and her husband John H. Muller of New York City, Bridget Foley of New York City, Elizabeth Foley M.D. and her husband Steven Bayer M.D. of Brookline, Mass., John T. Foley of Troy, Joseph G. Foley and his wife Sheila Sampath of Chestnut Hill, Mass., Michael O. Foley and his wife Anjella of Pawling, N.Y., and Matthew P. Foley of Troy. He was predeceased by his son, Hugh V. Foley III; his sister, Beatrice M. Foley; and his brother, John D. Foley. He was the brother of Joseph G. Foley D.D.S. of Troy, and the brother-in-law of Mary Helen O'Hara of Schenectady. Dr. Foley is also survived by nine grandchildren, Grainne Belluomo, Adian, Jordan, Desmond, and Nora Bayer, Catherine Foley, Lily, Bridget, and Hugh Foley.

The funeral for Dr. Foley will be held Thursday at 9:00 a.m. from the Wm. Leahy Funeral Home, 336 Third Street, Troy and at Our Lady of Victory Church in Troy at 9:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery.
